  1. In a spacious pot with a heavy base, combine the milk, sugar, and baking soda.
  2. Heat the mixture on low.
  3. Keep stirring continuously to avoid any burning.
  4. Keep cooking and stirring regularly until the mixture thickens and turns a caramel hue, which takes around 1-2 hours.
  5. Add in the vanilla extract.
  6. Allow the dulce de leche to cool down.
  7. Pour the cooled dulce de leche into a jar.
  8. Be aware that it will become thicker as it cools.
